An Exciting New Stage
Your baby is a toddler. She’ll be crawling, walking and exploring all the new items that surround her.
By the end of the second year, her growth rate will begin to slow down. From now until her next growth spurt, which occurs during early adolescence, her height and weight should increase steadily but not as rapidly as during those first few months of life. Three to five pounds may be all your toddler grows during the second year.
At 15 months, the average girl weighs about 22 pounds and is almost 31 inches tall, and the average boy weighs about 23 pounds and is also 31 inches tall. Over the next three months they’ll each gain approximately one and one half pounds and grow about an inch. Even though your toddler’s growth is dramatically slower during the second year, her looks will change more than her size. At 13 months old she still looks like a baby. But as she becomes more active, she develops muscle and starts to trim away the baby appearance.
As your child grows and develops, you’ll see many movement milestones. Your child will begin to do things such as:
- Walking alone
- Pulling toys behind herself while walking
- Carrying large toys or several toys while walking
- Running
- Standing on her tiptoes
- Kicking a ball
- Climbing on to and down from furniture unassisted
- Walking up and down stairs with support
