Meet one of Beech-Nut’s emerging leaders, our senior controls engineer, Jake Kolar!

  1. What do you love most about your career at Beech-Nut Nutrition? I love that the company values mirror my own, and that I have the opportunity to employ these values while leading my team.
  2. What gets you out of bed in the morning? My supportive wife, 2 very energetic sons and our dog…Ellie.
  3. What’s your favorite perk to working at Beech-Nut Nutrition? The gym and the cafeteria. I try and work out everyday at lunch but sometimes lunch with my team wins out. Oh, and getting your birthday off is cool, too!
  4. What do you do to live a balanced life? When I am at home and the kids are not in bed…it is family time which includes homework, hobbies and family dinner.
  5. How would you describe Beech-Nut Nutrition in 5 words or less? Innovative, Expanding, Pure, & Organic.
  6. What is your favorite product that we make at Beech-Nut Nutrition? Organic Banana, Blueberry & Avocado pouch.
  7. How would you describe your work style? Analytical, empathetic, thorough & tenacious.
  8. If you could have dinner with someone living or dead who would it be? Amelia Earhart – then I would be famous for solving the mystery!
  9. What is your favorite company or person to follow? Elon Musk. He is the Tony Stark of our universe but just hasn’t invented a suit…yet!
  10. What is your best life hack? Siri…she keeps me organized and on task!
  11. What have you learned at Beech-Nut Nutrition that you will never forget? The KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle is profoundly more valuable than I thought.
  12. What is the weirdest job you have ever had? In high school I worked at my home town Walmart and sometimes I had to be the door greeter.  All I can say is some people are friendly and some are not.
  13. What has been your biggest career success? Completing my bachelor’s degrees while working in my field full-time.
  14. What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader? I actively solicit feedback from my team to gauge how I am doing. If there are any issues, I work to resolve them and restore balance to the team. Ted Talks with Simon Sinek are my go-to for help!
  15. What is your biggest outside interest? A Saturday family ski trip to Stratton, Vermont, is the best!
  16. What is a book you have read recently? “The Last of the Mohicans” – James Fenimore Cooper. My son and I are reading it together.
  17. How do you incorporate our mission (Delight Consumers by Conserving the Goodness of Nature) into your role every day? Our mission inspires me to think of the word simplicity…I approach all my problem-solving activities in the Engineering department with that state of mind.
  18. How and where do you find inspiration? I like to observe leaders in other organizations to find out the issues they faced and how they resolved them. There is no point in re-inventing the wheel…whatever you are facing someone else faced the same thing and beat it!
  19. What are you most passionate about in your role? Pushing my team everyday to think of ways to work smarter not harder!
  20. What are three things still left on your bucket list? Become a pilot, visit Alaska, and own a micro-brewery.
